
Dr. Deepak Chamlagain

Dr. Deepak Chamlagain is a geo-hazards expert with PhD in Geology from the University of the Ryukyus, Japan in 2007, and Master of Science in Geology from Tribhuvan University, Nepal and University of the Ryukyus, Japan in 2000 and 2004 respectively. Beside these, Dr. Chamlagain has completed two Post-Doctoral Fellowships, first on Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering from the Sapienza University of Rome, Italy in 2012 under the European Union funding and second on Paleoseismology and Seismic Hazard Assessment from the University of Nevada, Reno, USA in 2018 under the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship Programme, USA. His areas of research interest are geo-hazards, engineering seismology and geology, and seismic hazard and risk assessment. Dr. Chamlagain has more than 50 research papers in journal of national and international reputes and one book on 2015 Gorkha earthquake.
Dr. Chamlagain has more than 20 years of work experience in geological and engineering geological investigations, landslide hazard assessment, paleoseismology, engineering seismology and seismic hazard assessment. He has sound knowledge on engineering geological software like DIPS for rock slope analysis. Dr. Chamlagain has skill on OpenQuake code for probabilistic seismic hazard assessment, ERRA and DEEPSOIL for 1D ground response analysis and Seismo signal for strong ground motion analysis.
Dr. Chamlagain has served national and inter-governmental organizations. He has served SAARC Disaster Management Center, New Delhi as a Geological Disaster Specialist. He was engaged as a Seismic Hazard Expert to prepare detail report on 2015 Gorkha earthquake at Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of Nepal under the support of United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Similarly, Dr. Chamlagain has also served as Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Expert to formulate provincial and local level DRR policies and strategic action plans for Province-5. Dr. Chamlagain was also engaged in development of risk sensitive land use plan under the Earthquake Risk Reduction, Recovery and Preparedness programme for Nepal UNDP/ERRRP – Project Nep/07/010. Dr. Chamlagain has also worked as a Chief Seismologist at Central Level Project Implementation Unit (CLPIU) National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) to prepare seismic hazard map of Nepal to revise the National Building Code-105 (NBC-105). Beside these, Dr. Chamlagain worked for many consulting firms including NEA Engineering Company Ltd. for seismic hazard assessment of the hydropower projects.
